Minnie's Boys

Book by Arthur Marx and Robert Fisher, (1970), Music is by Larry Grossman and Lyrics by Hal Hackady.

The Story: This madcap Marx Brothers musical is a touching, song-filled celebration of the origins of the show-business legends and the family's gutsy, tender, matriarch Minnie Marx (Annie Kaiser), an extraordinary woman who gave birth to a generation of laughter in the form of the maddest, merriest quintet that ever drove a mother-and then the world-wild. This is their story—and Minnie's as well. "Mama a Rainbow," "Rich Is," "Where Was I When They Passed Out Luck?" and the title song are just a few of the catchy, Broadway-style melodies in this memorable score from the composer of Goodtime Charley and Snoopy.

The cast includes Bobby Jackson, Bobby Ryan, Sean Powell, David Maier and Ryan Duncan as the Marx Brothers and Maggie Chapin in the rolesof several females they encounter. The production is directed by Ron Daum and Eric Little is musical director. Alex Diaz is the production's lighting designer and Kay Vega is the producer.

Ticket prices are $18 for all seats. Contact the Lakewood Theatre Box Office at (503) 635-3901 or Click here to Purchase Tickets securely online.

History of the Play:
After an unusually long preview period lasting for sixty-four performances, during which the creators constantly tinkered with the troubled show, the Broadway production, directed by Stanley Prager and choreographed by Marc Breaux, opened on March 26, 1970 at the Imperial Theatre, where it ran for eighty performances.

The opening night cast included Shelley Winters as Minnie Marx and Lewis J. Stadlen, whose portrayal of Groucho won him both the Theatre World Award and Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Performance in a Musical.

Groucho Marx, who was still alive at the time, received a playbill credit as the show's advisor. It was later revealed that Groucho had made no useful contributions, and had basically been paid off so that he would not raise any legal objections to the production. During its brief run, Groucho did help the musical by appearing on the Dick Cavett Show with the five young actors who portrayed the Marx boys in the musical.
